OUR VIEW Our View: A matter of survival Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jan. 16, 2015 @ 12:01 am Posted Jan. 16, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News Make no mistake, the Mt. Ashland Ski Area is a significant attribute for the city of Ashland and one that we should all hope will prosper. Sadly, that's not always the case, as environmental issues involving a proposed expansion have turned a portion of the community against the area. The issue for the area now is not expansion, but survival, as it finds itself in the second year of a low-snow cycle. Last year's lack of snow prevented Mt. Ashland from opening at all and forced it to apply for an emergency $750,000 loan. A second disastrous year could be, well, disastrous, for the area and the thousands of skiers who use it annually. Mt. Ashland's new brain trust, General Manager Hiram Towle and Jamie Schectman, sales and marketing manager, have been dealt a tough hand, but are doing the right thing in working toward a more sustainable operation — environmentally and financially. They are attempting to reduce operating costs, expand use of the existing area beyond the winter season and reduce environmental impact. The community should do its part to encourage that sustainability and to support the ski area. Ashland touts its tourism base, but sometimes is less than supportive of the tourism businesses that make up that base. Theater is the biggest attraction for tourists, but there are many other diverse pieces that matter, from parks to its golf course, ScienceWorks to its bustling downtown. Diversity is a key and Mt. Ashland is an important component of that. Pray for snow.   DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jan. 16, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with DailyTidings.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Alerts Email alerts RSS feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
