I don’t like the plant anyway, because the sharp spikes are a danger to my children and their friends. I’ve dug them up several times, but they always come back. How do I get rid of them? A: I have dealt with the same problem for years. A couple of years ago, my husband dug up two small yucca plants that had returned from the previous year, probably from a severed piece of tuber that got left behind. Before returning the excavated soil to the hole, I mixed up a quart of weed killer and poured the chemical in the hole, in the hope of preventing the yuccas from rebounding. Those yuccas did not return last year. Of course, I have no way of knowing if the chemical worked or if my husband removed every tiny piece of tuber that last time. If you decide to try this method, remember to always follow label directions when mixing and applying any chemical. Q: I want to plant a few azaleas around a tree in my front yard. I’ve tried planting under the tree before, but the plants never survived after the first year. In one of your columns, you explained how to plant shrubs under a tree so they would survive. I saved the column for future use, but now I can’t locate it. Can you explain one more time how to plant the shrubs? A: When a shrub is planted directly in the ground beneath large trees, its roots must compete with the tree’s root system for nutrition and moisture. The smaller shrubs will always lose that battle. The problem may be remedied by building up the soil beneath the tree to form a raised bed or a berm. Build the soil up sufficiently to allow the shrub to be planted in soil that rises above the root system. That way, the tree’s root system will be at one depth and the shrub at another, which will prevent the tree from competing with the shrub for nutrition and water.
