LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, April 4 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Apr. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Climate plan encouraging It is very encouraging to see that the Ashland City Council is developing a climate plan to address climate and energy changes (Michael Morris, Council Corner, March 31). Southern Oregon, like so many other communities around the globe, is feeling the devastating effects of the increasing climate crisis due to the impact of greenhouse gases and global warming. I also applaud the Tidings' support of the City Council’s climate plan, and agree that while this is an enormous worldwide issue, it’s important to take action at the local level (Our View, April 3). I am hopeful that the council’s announcement will help further awareness that global warming is real, and encourage more people to both reduce their personal carbon footprint, and get actively involved in community actions that address climate change. History has shown us that lasting change often occurs when social movements are built from the ground up. It indeed takes a village. While state and federal legislators strive to break the political gridlock and start to (truly) deal with carbon polluters, it’s critical that we do what we can to create change in our respective communities. Oregon Chapter, Citizens' Climate Lobby Ashland Our urban heat island One very compelling and often overlooked reason to replace the dark gray pavers with lighter ones similar to the Calle walkway is the "urban heat island" heat-sink effect of those 4,442 square feet of dark gray pavers on our Plaza. Temperatures there on a hot day can soar above 130 degrees! It adds thousands of BTUs to our downtown's heat coefficient on a hot summer's day. It's also very unhealthy, according to many nationwide studies, and unpleasant, especially for our older and handicapped citizens (not to mention our hundreds of thousands of summertime visitors). Even decades from now, when the young trees just planted on the Plaza mature, the shade they provide will be woefully insufficient to mitigate the relentless hot-plate effect of the sun beating down on the rest of the exposed dark gray pavers. On the next hot summer's day, take a stroll along the Calle walkway, and then hop over to our dark gray Plaza. There is a compelling value for creating a cooler, more comfortable, welcoming town center for our residents and visitors to enjoy. Where would you rather be sitting?
