POSTED: 21 March, 2000 Mt. A. expansion needs discussion With the debate over the Ski Ashland expansion intensifying, Linda Duffy has responded by canceling an open meeting with the National Forest Service for the public to discuss concerns. Environmental organizations are calling for the forest service to withdraw the DEIS for lack of alternatives and flagrant omissions, including a half-mile long fork of Ashland Creek. This community rallied around Linda Duffy because some believed she facilitated community discussion, and represented a shift in the Forest Service toward more responsible stewardship of our public lands. We need open public discussion! The forest service needs to organize an open public forum that includes all significant parties, including Ski Ashland, the Forest Service, The Sierra Club, Ashland Creek First!, and skier groups from both sides of the debate. The public comment period on the DEIS needs to be extended until this debate takes place. Canceling public meetings is no way to maintain public trust.
