An unidentified person was outside the bank when he took a call that turned out to be from a kidnap scammer, a scam which has been going on in this area recently. Unfortunate victims get a phone call with a person screaming in the background and a male claiming they have kidnapped a family member and will kill them unless the recipient of the call pays up. In this case, the victim headed inside the bank the bank while on the phone with the scammer, the Ashland Police Department reports, and started passing notes to the teller trying to describe to her what was happening. An alarm was raised and Ashland police responded as if there was a bank robbery in progress. No one was hurt and the victim, “a local man (who) got a nasty scare,” according to APD Deputy Chief Warren Hensman, was successfully calmed down. Hensman says if anyone gets such a call, to hang up and report the incident to the police.
