--> --> Cathy has worn out welcome on funny pages, Tidings' poll says Editor's note: The Tidings has updated software for its weekly Internet poll. It appears on the Home page of www.dailytidings.com as usual. Ashland Daily Tidings In vigorous voting poll respondents have made their opinion clear. "Cathy must go." In answer to The Tidings Internet poll question "If you could replace one comic strip from The Tidings' lineup, which one would it be?" a clear plurality determined that the comic strip Cathy should get the ax. Sixty-two voters, or 31 percent of the total of 199 votes cast, showed Cathy the door. Family Circus, with 39 votes, or 19 percent, was the next choice of pollsters. There was a clear drop-off after that, with Real Life Adventures attracting 24 votes, or 12 percent, followed by Garfield with 21 votes, or 10 percent and Dilbert with 20 votes, or 10 percent; Frank & Ernest had 14 votes, or 7 percent; Peanuts received 13 votes against it, or 6 percent. For Better or Worse enjoyed the safest position with just 6 votes, or 3 percent. The Tidings polling software allows only one vote per week per computer station. Internet voters are allowed to leave comments on the Web site ( www.dailytidings.com) by first voting and then writing their views in the comments box. People can read the comments during the week by first going to the poll, then clicking on "results," then "comments." Some respondents were surprised the Tidings would include comics as a poll issue, while others took advantage of the chance to give their opinion. This week's comments included: "I seriously doubt if Cathy resonates with a noticeable part of the population anywhere. How long can a single inside joke play?" "Cathy is too wordy and is all about legitimizing ancient stereotypes of women's role in society." "Men hate Cathy, non-corporate experience doesn't get Dilbert, everybody likes For Better or Worse." "Whatever you drop, please replace it with Non Sequitur." "Have you considered running Boondocks? It would be a good dose of color to our too pale community." "Garfield's violent themes are no longer cute nor healthy reading for children. "I have absolutely no interest in comic strips anyway. I think they're for dimwits." "Obviously some high-brows out there need to read some comics. It's called levity." "None of the above. Get rid of Doonsbury." The Tidings weekly Internet poll is an unscientific measurement of public opinion. Its sole purpose is to provide greater public input on a variety of issues. Email your...
