Years of disrespect and anger have taken their toll. This election year the voters will file for divorce. You promised you wouldn't run again. Here you are. You say you are our only hope. Can this relationship be saved? No. The relationship is past repair. You turned your back on our humble county problems to work with Federal issues that interested you more. You bragged about things you didn't really do, as with Clean Air. You betrayed us for Senator Gordon Smith when Democrats needed a Senate Majority. You went behind our back without open meetings, thinking yourself above the law. You've spent our levies as you pleased, not as we asked. For two campaigns, your supporters were Republicans. Now, Republicans have found someone new. So, you come back, like an unfaithful spouse creeping in late at night, promising better times. You say we're wrong to complain, we could do worse, that trust and integrity are not "issues." You're mistaken. Trust and integrity are the most important issues of all. We can do better. We can vote for Sue Densmore, and support her in November. It's time to say goodbye. Nancy Ames Cole Siskiyou Pass Time to retire Kupillas It's time to retire Sue Kupillas, after 16 long years as Jackson County Commissioner. By now, you'd think she'd have learned how to follow the rules. And yet, she was recently forced to apologize for cutting the public out of discussions of the Timbered Rock salvage plan. You'd think she'd have learned to respect the voice of the community. And yet, she opposed the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument even after overwhelmingly positive public hearings. You'd think she'd look out for the health of her constituents. And yet, she wants to "compromise" on air pollution requirements, bringing dirtier air to our valley. Luckily, we have a much better choice: Sue Densmore. An honored business and community leader, Sue Densmore knows how to listen and how to get things done: not behind closed doors, but out in the open for all to see. We need Sue Densmore. She'll be a breath of fresh air. Pepper Trail Ashland Densmore for a change I have been reading Sue Kupillas' re-election ads and hearing them on KCMX and if any of you voters believe them, I have some swampland in Florida that I would like to discuss with you. My understanding of urban renewal monies was that it was to be used to pull in business and industry to create jobs and then have their buildings on the tax rolls paying property taxes to the county. I don't believe that the library or Community Center in White City, which are tax exempt, really accomplish that goal. Nor does Sue Kupillas Blvd. with its fancy streets, sidewalks, trees and etc. Don't be fooled by the election year rhetoric of Sue Kupillas, let's tell her, "Sue long, it's been good to know you," Good-bye. Don Rist Talent Support for Buckley To listen to Peter Buckley speak is to know in your heart that positive change can and will happen when Peter is elected. Alice Paul, famed woman suffragist, said in an interview late in her long life, that, "enthusiasm was worth a lot more than experience in the long fight for a woman's right to vote." I believe that is the case in the upcoming legislative fight to get our state back, which is why my vote for state Representative is going to Peter Buckley. So join me in choosing the right person for this job. Tana Domecq-Davis Jacksonville Choose Buckley I encourage Ashland residents to support Peter Buckley for state Representative. Salem has never been so divided or polarized. Southern Oregon must have representation that not only stands up for personal principle, but is open to compromise. As a conservative Democrat, I may not always agree with Peter, but there are few people I respect as much as he. In this district, I could think of no one better to represent Ashland than Peter Buckley. Please give him your support. Mark S. Cogan SOU Student Give Buckley a chance Since I've seen first-hand Peter Buckley's strength in the political arena, I urge people to vote for him in the upcoming primary. By giving Peter a chance to represent Southern Oregon, we'll all be gaining someone who has the balance to mix political conviction with bipartisanship. Peter's sense of political balance is his greatest strength and is the main thing that sets him apart. Many of us are acquainted with politicians who fall into two disparate camps. These are the politicians who either don't flesh out their positions and bend like trees in the breeze, or the politician that's so intensely partisan that one fears they're closed to any rational debate. Peter is neither one of these. Peter Buckley has a straightforward agenda that is clear to all. His positions, and his willingness to learn the details to support his positions, are obvious. Just as importantly as this is that Peter is not a political ideologue. He's shown the skill of diplomatic and respectful debate that is the essence of a healthy democracy. Please join me in giving support to Peter Buckley in his sincere bid to be a local state Representative. Perry Casilio Talent Buckley for change Let's face it: The Oregon State Legislature is a dysfunctional mess. We need to elect officials that not only have the best ideas but the ability to inspire their colleagues to work towards a better solution for Oregon. I believe Peter Buckley has the passion, commitment and the skills needed to do the job. Please vote for a positive change in Salem: Peter Buckley for House District 5. Russ Silbiger Ashland Distortions blur issues I served on the Air Quality Advisory Committee that thoughtfully reviewed information, debated the changes to current policy and feel proud of the work that we did to come up with a balanced recommendation. Therefore I have a great deal of appreciation for Commissioner Sue Kupillas, who for the past 15 years has helped craft policy that cleaned up our air for what we enjoy today. Her recommendation, while more strict on growth allowance and safety margin, reflects a plan that also helps do what small cities want, that is allows them to locate small clean industry in their communities. Since automobiles are major polluters, and numbers of cars are growing, this would allow jobs near where people live, thus helping with the car pollution. I was disturbed at the distortions, scare tactics and half truths that confused an informed discussion and clouded the issue for the general public. The greatest service to the Valley would be to continue the dialogue on this very complex issue without the hostile political agenda. If the regulation remains the same and we don't address the issue of planning for jobs nearer where people live, we are not solving a significant part of the problem. I will support Sue Kupillas, even though she wanted the regulation more strict than the DEQ requirement, because she has the facts and a plan for cleaning up the air.
