The cause of death is complicated because Ashland Police Department officers shocked Hanson with a Taser just before he died. Hanson died at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. On the surface this looks to be a pretty good idea. Take vacant land in the city’s core (i.e., “built up area”) and use that land for new construction. Here’s the kicker: “especially as part of a neighborhood preservation or limited growth program.” — OPINION PAGE POLICY COLUMNIST Updated Tuesdays: From the Right Side Mike Green Liars, cheats and thieves … oh my! Welcome to another episode in the continuing saga of “Iraq, the sequel,” otherwise known as “Why is the CIA running Iraq?” In this week’s focus behind the scenes on the lead actors in the series, “Iraq, the sequel,” we turn our attention to yet another member of “The Family.” He is the cousin of Deputy Prime Minister (and new oil king) Ahmed Chalabi. He is also related to Chalabi’s nephew, Ali Allawi, who is the Minister of Finance. This man was Iraq’s Interim Prime Minister before we turned that position over to another long-term CIA-funded individual early last year. Before I introduce this gentleman (for whom I use the term loosely), I would like to remind the audience that there are numerous reviews of “Iraq, the sequel” around the nation. On Jan. 23, Oprah Winfrey conducted her own analysis of the theatrics we’re witnessing in Iraq. Unfortunately, her panel was replete with actors who were or are currently involved in a variety of the scenes that have been produced for our entertainment and misdirection. Both former president Clinton and his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton , joined others such as media mogul Ted Turner and Queen Rania of Jordan for a fun-filled afternoon of “who can give the best sound bite.” I applaud Oprah for her focus on Iraq, but unfortunately the panel she assembled was tantamount to rounding up stray actors from behind the curtain of “Iraq, the sequel” and interviewing them on the roles they played in the original screenplay and stage productions. CASE IN POINT (OPED) Updated Mondays: — CASE IN POINT Hold on to the story of ‘Night’ Much in the news of late has been the brouhaha regarding the memoir, “A Million Little Pieces,” by James Frey, selected last fall by Oprah Winfrey’s book club. It is a graphic and compelling account of Frey's time in a drug and alcohol rehab center. When Frey’s work was recently vetted by an online investigative Web site, it found that some sections of the book were embellished. Winfrey has since defended Frey saying that "the underlying message of redemption in James Frey’s memoir still resonates with me." The key words in Winfrey’s statement are "the underlying message." As if to make her point regarding the synergistic impact of a memoir, Winfrey recently announced that the book club's most recent selection is the memoir, "Night," written by Elie Wiesel, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. It is the account of his experience in the Nazi death camps during WWII. It is a courageous and important choice. The Chautauqua movement was begun in America by the Rev. John Heyl Vincent in 1874. Like millions of others of his countrymen, Vincent was appalled by the horrors of the Civil War. No one had imagined at the outset that such a war could have been so bloody. One United States Congressman had said on the floor of the House that he did not fear such a conflict.
