Gordon Self, Talent Thanks for generosity offered to a veteran My wife (a Desert Storm vet) and I (a Vietnam vet), donned our veterans hats and went out to enjoy the wonderful fall day that befell us on Veterans Day. On the very day that we’re supposed to be thanking our vets for their service, less than a handful of folks did so. We had lunch at a local restaurant. As a young couple at the bar departed, the man stopped, shook my hand, and thanked me for our service. After they left, our waitperson told us that couple had picked up the tab for our lunch! We do appreciate any time someone thanks us for our service, but this act of generosity and gratitude was overwhelming. After recovering from the shock, I barely had time to run out of the restaurant and yell a “Thank you” as he entered his car and drove away. We so very much appreciate his support of our troops (us) and wish to publicly thank him for his act of generosity. I have since found out his name, but respecting his (attempt at) anonymity, I shall simply say an insufficient: Thank you, Sir. We hope we have the opportunity to tell him in person sometime. Robert Stermer-Cox, Talent Democrats wimp out For onceI actually agree with Charles Krauthammer! In his Nov. 9 column in the Mail Tribune, he states: "Memo: GOP — you had a great night on Tuesday. But remember: You didn't win it. The Democrats lost it." Instead of a coherent message to the electorate, the Democratic "strategy" seemed to be to hide as far from President Obama's shadow as possible. Democrats are often portrayed as spineless when it comes to taking strong stands for progressive values; in the recent election, they lived up to this stereotype, sadly. Even on issues that the public is strongly behind, such as universal background checks for gun purchases, increasing the minimum wage or legal status for immigrants, most Democratic candidates were silent, afraid of "offending" the voters and hoping they wouldn't notice. Nationally, the voters did notice that the timid, wimpy Democrats had decided not to stand for much, and voted to change horses, even though the horses they switched to weren’t offering much of a message either, other than blaming Obama and "government inefficiency" for all current ills: the response to Ebola, the rise of ISIS, "outrages" involving the VA and the IRS — so many red-meat issues for cable TV honchos to sink their teeth into.
