ASHLAND DRUG STORE Main Street mainstay moves around the corner Smaller space, but more parking By John Darling For the Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By John Darling For the Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 12, 2014 @ 8:28 pm By John Darling For the Daily Tidings Posted Nov. 12, 2014 @ 8:28 pm » RELATED CONTENT • New assault on independent drugstores » Social News Ashland Drug Store, a fixture for many decades on Main Street, has moved to a smaller location around the corner on 2nd Street, across from Trinity Episcopal Church, for the simple reason that there’s lots of parking and they won’t have to compete with shops that cater to the tourist trade. The store took a cut in space from 3,400 square feet to 2,500, with resultant loss of greeting cards and medical equipment, which Medicare has cut back on, says Sandy Allen, owner since 2002. “The younger people don’t use the mail and send cards anymore,” says Allen. It’s mostly handled on the Internet and Facebook now.   Medicare recipients used to freely come to buy wheelchairs and other equipment, but since Medicare cuts, they are finding old equipment in the garages of friends and using that, she says, or getting it on loan from ACCESS in Medford. “People are hearing friends say ‘oh, my dad has one of those in his garage, so come and get it,’” she notes. “The store is a little smaller than before, but with the aging of the town, parking is more important and we’ve got 10 beautiful parking spots right outside.” Patrons of the older store, vacated Nov. 3, had to fight for parking in two hour zones on the main drag and often walk a good distance to get prescriptions filled. The store is “right up there among the oldest stores in Ashland” — perhaps the oldest, but no one is keeping track. Owner Sandy Allen says she can trace Ashland Drug in old newspapers back almost a century, to the 1920s. Competing as the oldest, she says, is Reinholdt & O’Harra Insurance, locally owned and operated since 1939, according to its website. Personally, she knows George Felger owned it in the 1940s — and she worked for him, starting in 1988, when she was “fresh out of college” as a pharmacist. Felger sold it to Jack Sabin in 1990. Sabin had worked for Felger for about 15 years before that, but Sabin sold it to Allen as he died of cancer in about 2002. All these chief pharmacists knew their customers well and, like Allen, “We help people, informing and counseling them on their medications, so they understand them better.” Most of Ashland Drug’s business is local, with little from the tourist trade, so prime location was not a big consideration, she says. When Ashland Drug moved last week to its new location behind the old spot, Ashland High School’s football team and old customers showed up to help with the move, says Allen, a real hallmark of the old neighborhood spirit of the town. Allen’s husband, Mark Allen, did much of the design and nail-pounding to get the new spot in order. It was previously the home of Unicorn Gifts & Toys. The old location on East Main will be refurbished and leased to new tenents, but none have been secured as yet, said Laura Laney of Landem Investment of Portland.
