It's a way of winter life that begins with dry land training in early November and ends with the state championships in early March. The AHS club downhill ski team wraps up another successful regular season this weekend, when it faces off against the rest of the Southern League in the final slalom (today) and giant slalom (Saturday) of the year. Both events start at 10 a.m. at Mount Ashland. Ashland high senior Justin Greenberg swerves his way down Mount Ashland during a prep ski race earlier this season. Greenberg leads the Southern League in the overall standings and will represent the Grizzlies at the state meet, March 2-4 at Mount Bachelor. Sean Bagshaw | outdoorexposurephoto.com Ten boys and 10 girls compete for Ashland, which is led by second-year head coach Tim Ferguson and his three assistants. For the Ashland girls, the weekend action mostly qualifies as a tune-up for state. The Grizzlies have long since wrapped up the Southern League team title, albeit against shorthanded competition - none of the other three SL girls teams field enough racers to even register a team score. Still, the Grizzlies have dominated individually as well, grabbing the top three spots in all four races. "We're having a great season," Ferguson said. "I think (the girls) have potential to do really well at state." League title in hand, a few of the AHS girls still have some serious incentive when it comes to the regular season finale. The Grizzlies can only take five competitors and one alternate to state, and a friendly intrasquad competition has developed - between Lindsay Warren, Jordan Rooklyn, Isabella Thorndike and possibly Maddy Stokes - that will determine the last two Ashland qualifiers Saturday. One Ashland girl who will not have to sweat it out this weekend is senior Camila Thorndike. A rocket of a racer, Camila Thorndike is at the top of both the slalom and giant slalom standings, giving her an 80-point lead (300-220) over up-and-coming sophomore teammate Christy Hald in the overall standings. It's been a steady climb for the older Thorndike, who's sister, Isabella, is a freshman. Camila Thorndike settled for third in the first two races, then won the third race (giant slalom) and finished second to her sister in the fourth (slalom). It's possible for Hald to overtake Camila Thorndike and capture the individual league title, but not very likely. Also competing for the Grizz girls are freshman Katie Pratt, junior Hannah Spector and freshman Alex Anarotico. On the boys side, the Grizzlies are sitting in third place, two team points (20-18) behind second-place St. Mary's and 14 points behind league leading Lakeview (32). North Medford is fourth with six points. Ashland must leapfrog St. Mary's in order to send a full team to state. Otherwise, only one Grizzly boy, senior Justin Greenberg, will get to go to Mount Bachelor. Greenberg has already put together a stellar season. He tops the league in the individual standings and, like Camila Thorndike, has done it in style by taking the lead in both the slalom and giant slalom standings. There is still much to be determined this weekend for Greenberg. With 160 points in each, he's tied for first with Eric Nash of Lakeview in the slalom standings and tied with Eli Odegaard of Lakeview atop the GS standings. After Greenberg, there's a steep drop-off for the Grizz boys. Ashland's next best placer is junior Mike Bulkin, who's currently sitting in 10th place with 104 points. There's potential to move up, however, with only 29 points separating Bulkin from seventh place Rob Sharpe of Lakeview. "For my boys, they gotta dig deep and put in some winning and consistent runs," Ferguson said. Also racing for the Ashland boys are: juniors Brendan Grimaldi, Rudi Sindelar and Josh Hawkinson; sophomores Nick Fitzpatrick, Jesse Cook and Brandon Evans; and freshmen Nathan Hamel and Reid Honeywell. Ferguson's assistant coaches are Steve Wasserman, Jeff Wolverton and Riley MacGraw. The state meet will be held March 2-4.
