King Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Mar. 19, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Mar. 19, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News Francis P. King, a graduate of Ashland High School, Class of 1940, and its Valedictorian, died March 3, 2016 at the age of 93 in New York City. "Frank," as he was known to his fellow students (because there was a girl in the class named Frances and to thwart confusion, Frank took that appellation) was born May 5, 1922 in Medford, Ore. He was raised by his mother Ruth King (neé Voruz), as her husband and Frank's dad, Mr. George King died of pneumonia in 1928. He had been a postal employee on the Rogue River Valley railroad. Frank shared many stories of his first jobs working for the Bagley Canning Company, running early morning milk deliveries, and selling fruit to the local grocery from their orchard in the back yard. He loved reading and studying at the library which was literally around the corner from the house. As a student, he assisted Angus Bowmer who founded the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, in its initial years. Both his mother, Ruth and his sister, Ninon Odile Shults acted on the Oregon Shakespeare stage, and Ninon was one of the first actresses cast as ‘Ophelia’. Frank received an associate degree from Southern Oregon Normal School and a bachelor of science degree from University of Oregon in 1943, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radar maintenance officer for B-29s in the western Pacific. Following military service, he attended Stanford University, where he received a master’s and a Ph.D.degrees . He was a Fulbright Scholar in 1951-52, studying at the École des Sciences Politiques in Paris. In 1953 he joined Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) in New York City in its pension research division. While working there for 45 years (his only job) he was author or co-author of numerous articles and books on retirement and benefit planning, including "Pension Plans and Public Policy," "Benefit Plans in Higher Education," "Retirement and Insurance Plans in American Colleges" (with Dr. William C. Greenough), and "Financing the College Education of Faculty Children" The latter study led to the founding of Tuition Exchange, Inc., where he served as chairman from 1967 to 1987. He retired as Senior Research Officer from TIAA-CREF in 1998. Frank enjoyed a beautiful retirement in New York City with Kelly enjoying museums; cinema; Central Park; Broadway; and annual trips to his beloved France, namely Paris where they often took the high-speed trains to the French countryside; and other nearby cities in Europe. They both also enjoyed trips to visit friends in the Bay Area, New Orleans, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami. Frank is survived by his loving spouse, Kelly Karavites; his nephews, Bill and Bevan Maxey of Spokane; and his niece, Jackie Leonard of Reno. A memorial service is planned soon at St. Bart's Episcopal Church in New York in late April; a specific date is yet to be determined.
