Knecht had her way with Roseburg’s Carissa Roman, winning easily, 6-1, 6-0 as Ashland swept the four singles matches and took the No. 1 doubles match to improve to 2-1-1 overall. Schaefer-Sharp’s hard-fought victory over Regan Abbot in what turned out to be the most competitive match of the day proved to be the difference for the Grizzlies. Schaefer-Sharp prevailed, 6-3, 6-4. “That one was pretty back and forth,” Ashland coach Keithan Gregg said. “We would have tied without it, so it was good to see her step up in a tough situation and get a win for us which basically gave the team a win.” The dual also featured the return of Ashland’s Vika O’Brien, half of the Ashland doubles team that won the last three Class 5A girls doubles state championships. O’Brien missed the first three weeks of the season nursing a foot injury but returned Tuesday, teaming up with new doubles partner Anne Kim to defeat Roseburg’s Monica Hall and Morgan Norvak, 6-1, 6-0. Ashland next hosts North Medford on Thursday. SINGLES — Ashley Knecht, A, def. Carissa Roman, 6-1, 6-0; Katy Barnard, A, def. Kayla Birdsell, 6-1, 6-0; Emily Haptonstall, A, def. Jose Perez had two hits to lead the Grizzlies (11-2, 6-1 MWL), who saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end. Marist starting pitcher Matt Haney held Ashland to one run in 4 1/3 innings to pick up the victory for the Spartans (6-7, 4-3), who have won three of their last four.
