OUR VIEW Homecoming changes with the times DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 26, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Sep. 26, 2014 @ 12:01 am » RELATED CONTENT • Something old, something new and something at the last se... • A Grizzly week of homecoming activity » Social News Ashland High School begins a new tradition tonight when its student body crowns three classmates as "Grizzly Royalty" rather than the customary homecoming king and queen. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say the students are continuing a tradition but changing it to reflect new realities. Either way, it reflects well on Ashland's student leaders. The school's student body co-presidents, seniors Brielle Preskenis and Jackson Richmond, came up with the idea as a way to make the homecoming court more inclusive. Students who were transgender or gender-neutral, they felt, would have difficulty identifying with a boy and girl paired up as homecoming king and queen. In addition, the two leaders felt the honor of being elected homecoming royalty should reflect a student's contributions to the school community. The school's 32-member leadership council approved the changes after a thorough discussion, and Preskenis and Richmond filmed a video for the school newspaper's website in which they explained the new process. Instead of voting for five girls and five boys, students now cast votes for 10 individuals regardless of gender. Those selected, three from each class, will be known as the homecoming court rather than "princes" and "princesses," and the three top vote-getters crowned Grizzly Royalty at halftime tonight may be two boys and a girl, two girls and a boy, three girls or three boys. Faculty also cast votes this year for the first time. Making all students feel included is a worthy goal.
