LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Dec. 23 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Dec. 23, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Dec. 23, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Thanks to community team I would like to thank a great group who made a special effort to put together a parade on very short notice for our SOU National Champion Raider Football Team. As the horn sounded at the end of our team’s victory on Friday, people sprang into action to make a parade happen on Sunday. Thanks to City Administrator Dave Kanner for his support. The Police Department, under the leadership of officer Steve MacLennan, with the help of officers Vanderlip, Hegdahl and Carpenter, with the support of our entire Police Department, provided the parade police escorts through downtown. The Ashland Chamber provided instant communications and logistical support. The SOU administrative staff, Liz Shelby and Provost Sue Walsh, helped coordinate between the athletic staff, the coaches and the team to get everyone on the same page and to the starting point. To TC Chevy and Alan DeBoer for stepping up and donating the use of team color Chevy Silverado trucks! To Rich Rosenthal and Sandra Slattery who made the time to help everywhere and to help drive the parade. To all our supporters who turned out to line Main Street and cheer our team on: thanks, thanks, thanks! And, finally, to our Raider coaches and team, thank you for making us proud, for your excellence in effort and for bonding the communities across Southern Oregon together in a very special way. Dennis Slattery, Ashland Ashland Kiwanis says thanks Ashland Kiwanis placed its Christmas giving trees at the Ashland Bi-Mart store and at the Ashland Tennis and Fitness Club again this year. Trees were decorated with the names of children recommended by South Valley Community Human Services in Ashland. Additional gifts that were needed to complete the gift-giving were shopped for by AHS Key Club members, and purchased by Kiwanis. All gifts were wrapped by Kiwanis members, “friends of Kiwanis” and AHS Key Clubbers, and delivered before Christmas.. Kiwanis sends a big thank you to the Ashland community for taking the name tags and buying the special gifts requested by these children. Ron Parker, Ashland Kiwanis Club Pipeline clarification needed The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) was authorized to examine cumulative environmental impacts of the proposed Jordan Cove liquid natural gas (LNG) pipeline from Canada to Coos Bay for shipment overseas. FERC dodged this responsibility in its recent Draft Environmental Impact Statement by claiming “out of scope” issues such as the need to export LNG, fracking, and induced production of natural gas were precluded in the report. Elsewhere in the report FERC states “existing transmission pipelines in the western states are underutilized.” We could assume the larger pipeline is not necessary ... unless more natural gas will be extracted with the pipeline, which a Department of Energy statement confirmed is the case. FERC's vagueness brought hundreds of people opposing the pipeline to a recent hearing in Medford. The pipeline will create a 90-foot swath through public land, pass under 400 waterways, through old-growth forests and take private land. It will also require waving environmental laws now in existence. FERC must be made to provide “clear” information about the environmental impact of the pipeline. Without it, no intelligent conversation can be had about its “public benefit” and future impact us.
