Despite steady rain, a couple hundred park fans lined up for the hot dogs, which were being cooked on-site by the Ashland Lions, the volunteer stewards for the park. The fourth-grade class of teacher Trish Dorr from Helman Elementary School gleefully explored the new features of the play structure, including a drum, climbing wall and ropes. “It’s a great community resource and the kids are having a great time playing,” said mom Julie Grantham. “It’s so nice.” The new park features a “rain garden,” which is watered by rain collectors and planted with native plants, said Libby Van Wyhe, manager of the Northwest Nature Center. It goes in the central spot, surrounded by paved walkways. “We love the park and are particularly thrilled by the community gardens,” she said. The community gardeners don’t just take care of their own little plot but, she adds, volunteer to help with growing things for the whole park. “We are super close to this park,” said Dorr, “and walk by it on our way to the Nature Park, watching it grow. It’s wonderful.” She adds that young children are drawn to study the many vegetable beds in the park. “It’s all amazing, so wonderful to have it open for the public,” said Lori Ainsworth, volunteer and event coordinator for city Parks & Recreation. Linda Chesney, stewardship coordinator of North Mountain Nature Park, invited attendees to roll up balls of dirt with many wildflower seeds from NMNP and go toss them in the nearby meadow, as part of a budding “guerrilla seed-ball movement.” “We put in a lot of the initial plants, flowers and shrubs here,” said Pete Jorgensen of the Lions Club, as he looked over the expansive gardening beds. They are about three-quarters full and may be leased by community gardeners by going on the North Mountain Park Nature Center website. Virginia Vogel, who raised her children on the site and sold it to the city of Ashland in 2001, said, “It’s fantastic. I can’t believe it’s being enjoyed by so many people and will be forever."  Her family bought it in 1967, said daughter Suanne Cleveland, as she showed a photo album of flooding (it’s on a flood plain), horse riding, a “milking parlor,” cattle and barns where a brother raised homing pigeons. “The family is so pleased,” she said. Another daughter, Beth Vogel, who lives next to the park at Hersey and Oak, said, “It’s done well. It was my play yard as we grew up here. It’s been a journey watching this be created day-by-day." The park started building in June 2014, with a $619,000 budget. It was expanded with a $309,950 local government grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
