Bravo to Southern Oregon Film & Media, a nonprofit industry association dedicated to promoting moviemaking, for submitting Ashland's application for the listing. Ashland was No. 2 in last year's list, behind Asheville, N.C. The competition wasn't just about making movies, although that was a primary focus. It was also about Ashland as a place to live and raise a family. Ashland's deep local talent pool, its wealth of scenic locations and fast Internet service were pluses. City officials should take note of that last point. A viable Ashland Fiber Network makes a good selling point for attracting this and other industries.   The magazine touted the ease of securing permits from the city. Permits for film work has been a subject of some discussion by the City Council since the filming of "Wild" in 2013. The city's film and video ordinance was last updated in 1984, and the technology has changed a great deal since. The council is expected to take up the issue again this month, with the intention of streamlining the permit process. Councilors have a responsibility to minimize disruptions to residents and local businesses, but also should take care not to erect barriers that could discourage filmmakers from choosing to work here.
