It looks foolish to claim one is not a scientist, as so many of our elected representatives seem to be doing, and then offer opinions contrary to what almost every scientist is saying. Rather than maximizing corporate short-term profits, shouldn't our representatives be acknowledging what the science tells us and doing what they can to protect this planet for our descendants? After all, it’s the only planet we’ll ever have. It would help our descendants if we placed a fee on the fossil fuel pollution that is causing the climate chaos we already are experiencing and from which they will suffer more. It would also help our descendants if representatives at the state and federal levels were to oppose developments that would increase our emissions of greenhouse gases. This means rejecting proposals such as Keystone XL and the Jordan Cove LNG Export Terminal and Pacific Connector Natural Gas Pipeline. Are the few jobs they might generate really worth compromising the livability of our planet? Ken Deveney,  Ashland Winter follies Red cinders on Ashland roadways have been the norm since 1974. Now there is a new way to deal with ice on Ashland roads, and especially the Siskiyou Pass: Chemicals. It smells a lot like kerosene. I think it is ironic that the “hybrid” population complains about the ice most. Last winter I heard more complaints from recent transplants about the snow sticking on the road for a month: “Back in my hometown of ____ they would have had this scraped up the same day.” I told several people that, “This is a very unique kind of snow, probably why the Eskimos have a hundred words for snow.” Their response, “The city should keep our roads clear.” I say, “Rely on the city less, trade for a 4X4, drive less, slow down. I am no example of driving less, but I can say I saw somebody coming down the Siskiyou Pass, holding the cell phone like a tostada, smoking, and eating at the same time. Good thing there was a recently sprayed magic carpet of salt solution giving off a distinctive kerosene smell, underneath that 20 mph-over-the-speed-limit, two-wheel-drive vehicle careening into my lane. Tom Frantz , Ashland A terrible disservice I think it is a terrible disservice to eliminate the strip "For Better or Worse." I have been a faithful reader for many years, and did not realize it was doing reruns. I just thought they had reset the clock. Whatever it is, along with "Stone Soup," I enjoy, appreciate, and frequently laugh. Far better to drop "Garfield," which is always inane, lionizing self-absorption, and bad attitude. "Frank and Earnest" is also of little appeal. On a separate note, kudos for the Rothschild column. He stirs the pot uniquely. Jerry Nutter , Ashland Not even your child's bus I moved to this fabulous, majestic and cozy small city nearly three years ago. One thing I thought was just a tad different from other places I lived: completely stopping at a red stop sign. Nobody does it! I cannot tell you the many times I have seen children's school buses not stop. So, one day as I was browsing the many quaint shops downtown, I came upon a policeman. I asked him, "Is there such a thing as a rolling stop?" He said no. Then I thought to myself, perhaps everybody is in a rush to get somewhere or perhaps there is some weird loophole, but I have yet to see anyone actually come to a complete stop!
