The students walked from the school’s campus off East Main Street to the Plaza, filled up water bottles, then walked back to school — a symbolic march of approximately 3 miles. The purpose of the project was to “better understand what it is like for people around the world who walk hours per day just to fill jugs with water, often dirty, unhealthy water,” according to a press release. Willow Wind students have been studying water since September, focusing on the oceans, the water cycle, the water shed and ways in which animals use water. The unit study shifted in focus this semester to water abundance, scarcity and the use of water around the world. The students learned that nearly 800 million people do not have access to clean water. Willow Wind teachers have helped the students identify the problem, brainstorm solutions and take action. The purpose of Thursday’s walk was to raise awareness and encourage people to contribute to the school’s effort to provide water to a village.
