Ashland softball team garners first league win Wire Reports EAGLE POINT - The Ashland High Grizzlies and Eagle Point Eagles each recorded their first wins of the Southern Oregon Conference softball season in a doubleheader split Saturday. The Grizz dominated the opener 8-0 and the Eagles took the nightcap 3-2. In Game 1, Jenna Randall went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, Megan Beugli also drove in two runs, and Hanna Elliott and Tessa Maurer each added two hits for Ashland (3-14 overall, 1-7 SOC). Beugli pitched the first six innings for the win. In Game 2, Eagle Point's Kristina Bateman broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning when she singled, stole second, then stole third and scored on an error on the play. Bateman and Salina Sychla were each 2-for-3. Pitcher Jamie Williams limited Ashland to three hits, struck out six and didn't walk a batter for EP (4-9-1, 1-7). AHS Baseball Eagle Point erupted for 27 hits and played errorless defense in a convincing SOC sweep Saturday at North Mountain Park. The Eagles won the opener 13-1 in five innings and the nightcap 19-7. In the second game, the Eagles (8-6, 3-5 SOC) led 10-6 entering the seventh inning, then scored nine runs to win going away. Eagle Point's Casey Hedrick had three hits, including two doubles, three runs and two RBIs. Scott Snow was 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs. Mark Farrell and Ricky O'Callahan each had two hits and two RBIs. For Ashland (8-7, 4-4 SOC) Jackson Rowe was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Farrell provided pop in the first game for the Eagles, belting a three-run homer to cap a seven-run third inning. O'Callahan was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs, and four other Eagles had two hits in the five-inning contest. Winning pitcher Chris Boyd allowed six hits, struck out four and walked two. Ashland's Chad Hegdahl and Elliot Stone were each 2-for-2. AHS Girls Tennis Ashland improved to 5-0 in the SOC and 7-0 overall with a decisive 6-3 victory over North Medford Saturday at Hunter Park. The Grizzlies won four of five singles matches, with their only loss coming on an injury default. Ashland's No. 2 singles player, Lauren Sargent, played an efficient match in posting a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ingrid Wahlberg. For North Medford (6-3, 4-2), the top doubles team of Annie Chaney and Shannon Leever teamed up for the first time this season and defeated Justine Bowen-Jones and Jessica Baker, 6-3, 6-1. Chaney and Leever finished second at state last year but hadn't yet played together because Leever was recovering from a broken left wrist she suffered during the snowboarding season. SOU Women's Tennis SOU capped the season with a 5-4 win over the University of Alberta, and eighth-ranked Lewis-Clark State College rolled to its eighth straight NAIA Region I tournament championship Saturday on the McNeal Hall courts. After going 0-2 Friday in the four-team regional round robin, the Raiders (11-5) edged Alberta in the third-place dual. Southern registered easy wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles, and clinched the school's first win over the Edmonton, Canada school in four tries over the past two seasons when senior Bridget Wagner, senior Kristin Maloney and sophomore Megan Loeding posted straight-set wins in the top three singles spots.
