What can we do to save our liberal little town? It never ceases to amaze me the lengths that prohibitionists will got to just to put cannabis in a bad light. Now some of the Ashland City Council members are “stinking” to new lows! That’s right I said “stinking,” not “sinking." It seems that Mr. Kanner has his feathers all messed up over outdoor growing of cannabis. According to him, this is a path that will lead us down the river of no return with the total breakdown of Ashland into an odor-filled skunk town! If they are so worried about odors, they should ban diesel trucks and cars from stinking up the town! Then he goes on to say how there somehow will be massive commercial grow operations all over Ashland. I guess he’s never tried to rent a house here. His brilliant idea — make it illegal to grow outdoors; better yet, indoors too! Never mind the majority of voters that passed Measure 91. According to the story written by Thomas Moriarty (Tidings, Feb. 19), he thinks the “new ordinance could prevent a rash of unoccupied grow houses.” Another prohibitionist on the council, Mr. Lemhouse, suggested that “time-place restrictions could include prohibitions on indoor growing near schools — playing the "it’s for the children” card. Implying that cannabis users are irresponsible and care nothing about their community is a weak, tired statement at best. According to Mr. Kanner, there were “about a half a dozen complaints all over town.” In a town of about 25,000, give or take, that amounts to about .024 percent! Which, in the mind of a prohibitionist, is a really big problem. So in order to placate the very small, loudmouth minority, they are perfectly willing to subvert the will of the majority of the state’s voters? If the Ashland City Council were to pass such an ordinance, they should include funds for litigation, because it will surely come. I'm certainly for reasonable controls — that's why I voted for Measure 91. If you did the same, please let them know how you feel about this. R.L. Tokareff, Ashland Fast track to hell Remember the goose that laid the golden eggs? Greed-driven men killed her to secure more of them, but instead destroyed everything. The same thing is happening today with our beautiful earth. We are killing it in our quest for fossil-fuel riches. And make no mistake: Man is doing this, not God. We are killing our earth by emitting gigantic amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere where they accumulate and reflect the heat back, making our world hotter and hotter. The science is not in dispute at all, and in fact scientists have understood the mechanism since the 1800s. Even Alexander Graham Bell made note of this scientific fact and opted for alternatives to fossil fuels. Despite the scientific world being virtually unified in their understanding, humans remain on the fossil fuel fast track to hell with Keystone XL, LNG, coal, oil, natural gas, fracking and pipelines galore. Actual data and scientific facts are eschewed in favor of lies and misdirection — for a tidy profit, mind you. Our Mother Earth is being killed just like that unfortunate goose with golden eggs; killed by the murderous greed of man. And we could stop it if we cared. Lee Lull, Talent Police need help I used to be a deputy Public Guardian at the Los Angeles County Public Guardian’s office. The name of the agency defines its function nicely. Through those years, I often needed police backup for dicey situations. In almost all cases when the police showed up, it was necessary for me to give them instructions as to how to behave. The people we were dealing with were not criminals, and each case had its own delicate needs. I have followed the Hannah Thomas-Garner case from the beginning, and still shake my head in disbelief at the nature of the police work being done.
