The fire was reported by neighbors who saw a large column of smoke rise from the structure at 240 Dead Indian a little before 9:30 a.m. this morning, said Margueritte Hickman, fire prevention officer for Ashland Fire & Rescue. Hickman said fire crews could see the smoke from their downtown fire station. When firefighters arrived, the barn was already engulfed in heavy smoke and flames, Hickman said. As of 10 a.m., the fire was still burning, although fire crews appeared to have a tenuous hold on the blaze. There were no structures immediately in danger as of 9:50 a.m., fire officials said. Hickman said the barn's owner told fire officials they were doing a control burn near the barn when a gust of wind sent sparks onto the roof. "He indicated that the wind caught some embers, which went onto the roof and caught on fire," she said. "It appears the fire quickly spread to the rest of the barn." Hickman said southeast winds were causing the smoke and embers to spread, making fighting the fire quite a challenge. Hot embers from the blaze caused small fires about 100 feet from the barn in some bushes and grass. The spot fires were quickly contained, Hickman said. There was no injuries reported, Hickman said. It was too soon to have a cost estimate. Fire crews from Ashland and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 could be seen trying to douse the flames as they battled heavy columns of smoke. The smoke clouds covered the highway as smoke wafted to the Oak Knoll Golf Course.
