LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, June 11 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Scrap 'Gather' and 'Threshold' It was clearly a mistake for the City Council to give the Public Art Commission such unbridled power over the criteria for and use of our public art funds ($100,000). The PAC is an elite group composed of many newcomers to Ashland, which fails repeatedly to propose installations that reflect art appealing to the vast majority of Ashlanders. The council does not really have a choice between "Gather" and "Threshold." Several individuals with engineering experience have commented on the Ashland Plaza Restoration Project FB site that "Gather" is structurally unbuildable as proposed: It's top-heavy, inherently unstable, and will need many reinforcements which will render the final work fundamentally different from the original concept drawing shown to the public. Appallingly, the PAC is having its members and supporters lobby the council for approval. The council should scrap this entire project and start over. $100,000 is a huge amount of our public funds, and should not be spent on such an unwelcome work of art. David Sherr Ashland Hot dog On June 7, 2016, approximately 6 p.m., I parked at RiteAid in Ashland. It was 95 degrees. I noticed a panting dog in a parked car in direct sunlight with windows cracked 1-2 inches. I immediately called the Ashland Police Department. I went into RiteAid and made an announcement. I went outside 15 minutes later and called the PD again and pleaded that they hurry as this dog could die. I was asked my birth date! I argued that this was irrelevant. Finally, officers arrived after 40 minutes of this dog confined in the hot car in direct sunlight. They did not cite the owners, who arrived shortly afterward. The officers said they wanted to use this as an educational opportunity. JCC 6.612.09(d)(3) states that it is unlawful to confine animals in a car under conditions that may endanger the health or well-being of the animal, including but not limited to dangerous temperature, etc. The officers told me the dog was not in distress despite panting in the hot car under direct sunlight at 95 degrees for approximately 40 minutes. Unbelievable! Officers. Please do your job. My homeowner taxes pay your salary to prevent animal neglect. Lisa A.
