The cast will spontaneously create hilarious show tunes, the audience will choose its favorites and, in Act II, the troupe will roll out a show of original music based on the top song. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Tickets cost $22, $25 or $28; $15, $18 or $21 for ages 18 and younger, and can be purchased at the Craterian box office, 16 S. Bartlett St., online at craterian.org or by calling 541-779-3000. Dan Kocurek and Christine Eggert The jazz duo will present cafe music that made Paris famous at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Kocurek and Eggert are classically trained, and the show is inspired by the story in the 1951 film "An American in Paris." Kocurek is the narrator and the American, and Eggert is the beautiful Parisian. As the story unfolds, the duo play music by Debussy, Gershwin, Stravinsky and Piazzolla, along with cabaret songs made famous by Edith Piaf. Tickets cost $10, $5 for seniors, and can be purchased at the Performing Arts box office in the Music Building, online at sou.edu/performingarts or by calling 541-552-6348. Full-time students get in free. Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon Violinist Sara Klein, YSSO's concert master and its 2014 Concerto Competition winner, will play solo the second and third movements of Piotr Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major with the 75-member youth symphony, directed by Cynthia Hutton. Concerts are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center, 830 N.E. Ninth St.; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Georges Enesco's Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1 also will be part of the program. YSSO's youth orchestra, also directed by Hutton, will play arrangements of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, along with music by Strauss and Saint-Saens. YSSO's youth strings, led by Faina Podolnaya, will play works by Klaus Badelt, Bob Phillips and other composers. Tickets cost $10, $5 for students, and can be purchased at Oregon Books in Grants Pass, Larry's Music in Medford or Paddington Station in Ashland. Tickets for the Craterian show can be purchased online at craterian.org or by calling 541-779-3000. Groundation with Indubious Groundation, a Northern California roots-reggae band with jazz and dub influences, will play Friday, Feb. 20, at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St. With almost a dozen albums to its credit, the band's newest is "A Miracle," released in January. Southern Oregon's Indubious — bassist Spencer Burton, keyboard player Evan Burton and drummer Matthew T. Wells — will open the show with a mix of reggae, dance hall and new roots reggae. The music starts 9 p.m. A full bar and food will be available. Tickets cost $25 in advance and can be purchased at Music Coop, 268 E. Main St., or online at liveatthearmory.com . Tickets will cost $30 the day of the show. Alan Berman Trio The trio — Alan Berman on keys, Jeff Addicott on bass and Garret Edmands on drums — will play a range of swing, blues, Latin rhythms, foxtrots and an occasional waltz for dancing from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Imperial Events Center, 40 N. Front St., Medford. Look for music by Johnny Mercer, Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington and others. Admission costs $10. Food and beverages available. Call 541-499-8855 or 541-779-2042 for information. 'Searching for Aztlan' This bilingual play written and directed by Lakin Valdez will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in the auditorium at Phoenix High School, 745 N. Rose St. Set in Arizona when a city school board closes Mexican-American Studies, teacher Dolores Huelga finds herself unemployed and in an alternate reality. Lost, she sets out for the mythical city of Zatlan. Along the way, she meets other dispossessed exiles and joins their forces. "Searching for Aztlan" is a journey of discovery, illustrating what it means to be Chicano in contemporary society. The play is the culmination of theater workshops with Teatro Milagro at Phoenix High School and Talent Middle School. Admission is free.
