Playwright John Lahr brings the battle between good and evil from novelist Richard Condon's celebrated book, "The Manchurian Candidate," into the present. "John Lahr's ingenious updating substitutes Japan-bashing for the red-baiting of Richard Condon's original, producing a wonderfully preposterous scenario involving a brain-washed killer and a plot to make Tokyo dependent on U.S. oil by nuking the Gulf," wrote Times of London. “The Manchurian Candidate” previews Wednesday, Oct. 14, with a benefit performance for the Ashland Rotary Club. Tickets are $100 and include all fees. A low-priced preview will be available Thursday, Oct. 15, with tickets at $14. The show opens Friday, Oct. 16, and runs through Nov. 8. A pay-what-you-can performance will be offered Wednesday, Oct. 21. Curtain is at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at Camelot Theatre, 101 Talent Ave., Talent. Tickets cost $27, $25 for students and seniors (except for Sunday matinees). Tickets and information available at www.camelottheatre.org or 541-535-5250. The box office is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and one hour before performances. Reserved seating is available for an additional $2 per ticket. Student rush tickets cost $10 and can be purchased 10 minutes before curtain, except Sundays. “Try to imagine a state of being where reality and fantasy are indiscernible from each other," says Roy Von Rains, director of the Camelot production. "Where the most solid truth is no more valid to you than the most fantastical fiction. A state of being that leaves you desperately fumbling in the dark for any sense of peace and balance. "I can only imagine that this is the state plaguing Shaw, Marco and Melvin — our brave Marines in 'The Manchurian Candidate.' There is something titillating about feeding the darker side of your imagination. This story absolutely feeds that side. The 'Jekyll and Hyde' aspect of the brainwashing process and the treacherous world of American politics is but the backdrop for this fascinating story. Overt racism, the larger-than-life characters and the need to succeed at any cost is what drives the story.“ Among Lahr’s books are “Notes On a Cowardly Lion: The Biography of Bert Lahr,” “Dame Edna Everage: Backstage with Barry Humphries” — which earned a Roger Machell Prize — and “Prick Up Your Ears: The Biography of Joe Orton” — which was made into a film. Since 1992, Lahr has been a regular contributor to The New Yorker. For 21 years, he was the magazine's senior drama critic. His stage adaptations have been performed around the world, and he is the first critic to win a Tony Award. He lives in London. Condon, born in 1915 in New York City, is also know for his 1985 work "Prizzi's Honor." Condon died in 1996 in Dallas. Camelot’s production of “The Manchurian Candidate” stars Aaron Garber as Raymond Shaw, Jeff Golden as Johnny Iselin, Presila Quinby as Mrs. Iselin and Mark Schneider as Ben Marco. Brian O’Connor is director of photography and original music is by Karl Iverson. The cast of 23 also features Tessa Alleman as Ellen, Bob Clark as Senator Jordan, Aaron J. Falk as Corporal Melvin, Jake Hastings as Mavoles, Barbara Henson as Eugenie Cheyney, Stephanie Jones as Jocie Jordan, Tim Kelly as General Jorgenson, Michael Meyer as Billy, Brian O’Connor as the cameraman, Jack Seybold as the Secretary of Defense, and Steve Sutfin as Gaines. The production team for “The Manchurian Candidate” includes Camelot’s resident designers: properties mistress Shelly Hall, sound, audio and video designer Brian O’Connor, set designer Don Zastoupil and lighting designer Evan Carbone. Costume design is by Chani Hubbell.
