Yeah, you, leaning back in the easy chair, under the mountain of Doritos crumbs, flicking the buttons on that remote control faster than an uzi. It's time to hit the power button and dehybernate because Championship Week is here. OK, none of our local teams can earn a championship by week's end - not a big one anyway. But if I don't see you out there somewhere this week, you're either A: not a real sports fan, or � B: stuck at one of those darn new traffic lights. What's the big deal about this week, you ask. Geez, you really do need to get out. OK, I'll go through it one day at a time. Today Look here, this should draw your attention away from those Super Bowl halftime replays. It's Ashland vs. Roseburg, girls' basketball, at Mountain Avenue gym. Here's the recent history: the last time these two teams played, the Indians made like Justin Timberlake and danced all over the Grizzlies' nine-game winning streak. You might say, they made the Grizzlies look like boobs. Anyway, that kicked off Ashland's longest losing streak of the season - three games. The Grizzlies have since won four straight to get back into Southern Oregon Conference championship contention. Oh yeah, here's the not-so-recent history: Ashland and Roseburg don't like each other. Friday You need that teleportation machine from The Fly to fully appreciate this day because there's just too many can't-miss events going on. First, beginning at 9 a.m. at Eagle Point, the Ashland High swim teams will compete in the district meet, with the Grizz boys looking to complete what has been a dominating SOC season. It's only Day 1 of the two-day event, but districts will be the Grizzlies' last appearance in the Rogue Valley this season, so try to make at least one day. Later that night, the fun really starts. At 7 p.m., the Grizz girls' hoopsters play another big one against a team it lost to earlier in the season - Grants Pass. The Grizzlies are playing much better now than they were the first time they faced the Cavers, but that's not saying much. If you recall, Ashland scored just 30 points in its six-point loss at Grants Pass back on Jan. 16, prompting head coach Steve Humann to start talking about the sun rising again, which it did, despite the Grizzlies' efforts to block it out with missed shots. At 7:30 p.m., the Southern Oregon University men host third-ranked Albertson in the Raiders' last-ditch effort to steal a Cascade Conference regular season title. SOU dunked the Coyotes by 21 points in Caldwell, Idaho on Jan. 17, so there's the always-intriguing revenge factor. For the Raiders, however, there's the we-don't-want-to-end-up-behind-Oregon Tech-in-the-standings-and-have-to-travel-to-Klamath-Falls-in-the-playoffs factor. Saturday Best for last? Maybe. The SOU wrestling team hosts the four-team NAIA Western Regional meet, which will feature some of the best NAIA grapplers in the country. The Raiders have already qualified pretty much their whole team for nationals, but plenty of pride will still be on the line and rematches abound. This will also be your last chance to see the Raiders in person before they head off to Great Falls, Mont., for nationals on Feb. 27-28. Well, there you go, buddy, all the information you should need to enjoy what may be the best five-day stretch of local sports in months. So dig out that screaming voice, grab some friends and trade that easy chair for a bleacher seat. Weeks like this don't come around often. Besides, what would you rather do: literally grab a front row seat to Ashland sports history, or watch the "boob" tube for the 489th consecutive hour? Don't answer that.
