Ashland Garden Club: Michael Parker, biology professor at Southern Oregon University, will present "Organisms in the Water" at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way, Ashland. In Scene: The Schneider Museum of Art will present "In Scene," a group exhibition of eight artists who work in a variety of mediums such as video, installation, sculpture and photograms in order to explore the state of the natural world in modern times. Emergency Preparedness Workshops: Jackson County Fire District 5 and the Phoenix/Talent Map Your Neighborhood Program are hosting a free series of four, one-hour workshops focused on family emergency preparedness and being self-reliant during an emergency. Sam Baker: The Austin, Texas, based singer, songwriter and guitarist will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the Unitarian Fellowship, 87 Fourth St., Ashland. Baker's musical influences include Ken Kesey, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Bob Dylan and fellow Texans Lightnin' Hopkins, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. His 2013 album, "Say Grace," was listed by Rolling Stone as on the top 10 country music albums of the year. Center for the Visual Arts Galleries: New exhibits run through April 22 at the Center for the Visual Arts Galleries, located at 1250 Siskiyou Blvd. on the Southern Oregon University campus in Ashland. In the Retzlaff Gallery, Trevis True displays seven abstract interpretations of color and shape created from 1,230 profile pictures from the dating app Tinder. In the Thorndike Gallery, Melissa Ghiglieri presents the exhibit "Methodical Affliction," large-scale paintings that address physical, psychological and emotional abuse. The Meyer Memorial, Art Department Chairs and Boise-Cascade Galleries feature the "Best of the Best Student Art Show" with work by students from 15 regional high schools. See www.sou.edu .
