By Jason Hoopes Ashland I'd like to see more so-called Christian "leaders" come out against, not just the war, but war itself. Can anyone imagine Jesus commanding an army? Can anyone imagine Jesus taunting "bring 'em on" when confronted with aggression? What if he had done that, instead of lovingly allowing his own violent death, which was, by the way, executed by the established nation-state government? Jesus rejected civilization (the religion of production and profit over life) and was a radical cult leader who preached love above all. If Jesus were active in today's society, wouldn't he reject war, capitalism (but I repeat myself), money, cars, technology, borders, violence, voting, Presidents, police, taxes, pavement, politics, and any other of the "fruits" of civilization you can imagine? Wouldn't he reject them all, non-violently, through non-participation? And our nation-state government, indeed any Nation-State government, would still imprison him and put him to death, as we do physically, psychologically, and spiritually, to anyone who doesn't toe in line behind the wealthy class' "laws." Jesus is president Bush's favorite philosopher? Then why does Bush hoard money and resources? Why does he wage aggressive wars, and deal in affairs of the State? Why does he taunt "bring 'em on"? Why do so many Christians support, or at least tolerate and make excuses for, war and it's mother-machine, the State? The love Jesus taught transcends the ideas of national patriotism and economics. It transcends the idea of hunting and killing your enemies. In fact, if you love your enemies, they disappear. But Americans are more concerned with who gets chosen on Outback Jack, or whether or not Britney Spears ate a corn dog for breakfast. Our nation officially called the destruction of thousands of lives, one night in Baghdad, "Shock and Awe", a disgusting insult likening our own state-sponsored terror to a fireworks display. It just looked like a replay of New York on Sept. 11, 2001, to me. Does God choose war leaders? Isn't God professed to be on the side of all political leaders, as they see fit? Did God choose Bush? If so, God chose poorly.
