Send a letter to the editor at www.dailytidings.com/sendletter . » Social News The new Ashland Creek Park on Hersey Street got its first major tree Friday when the city Tree Commission honored Arbor Week by planting a 15-foot tall Swamp White oak. It’s a hardy species from the southeast U.S., not a native, but it was chosen, said arborist Casey Roland, because it will stand up to all manner of abuse and recreation that you get in a park. It’s about 10 years old, will grow to 50 or 60 feet, then spread out wide over its 300-year life, said Pete Baughman, arborist with Ashland Parks & Recreation. It will also get some punishment from Ashland’s periodic floods, as it sits right in the middle of the flood plain of Ashland Creek, about 20 feet west of the creek. The tree was donated by Dan and Dave Bish of Plant Oregon in Talent and planted gratis by Roland, a tree commissioner, and workers from city Parks & Recreation. It’s value is about $300. “We’re planting it as an expression of community support for trees and to get more people involved in planting and caring for trees,” said Gregg Trunnell, Chairman of the Tree Commission. “The tree is very sturdy and hardy. It will have to have irrigation put in and will be monitored so it grows and survives.” Creation of the seven-acre park is behind schedule but it will have its grand opening celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.Wednesday, May 20, according to the city website. It features a playground, hiking-jogging path, community garden slots, playing field and bike parking. Building on it started in June 2014. Some pines have already been planted, to be followed by more pine and oak. Today, April 11, friends and family will gather for planting of a red flowering plum tree, in memory of Karen Lee Greenstein, 58,  a police dispatcher killed March 27, 2014, by a wrong-way drunk driver on the freeway.
