Phoenix has a new park: Blue Heron Family Park PHOENIX - The new 25-acre city park between Interstate 5 and Highway 99 has a name - Blue Heron Family Park. The city council chose the name Monday night at the final meeting before the newly elected councilors take office in January. Councilman J. Allen Harris, a 25-year veteran of the council, sat in the mayor's seat for the final meeting before he retires. The council chose the park's name from a list of suggestions by city residents compiled by the Parks and Recreation Commission: Blackberry Community Park, Phoenix Community Park, Blue Heron Family Park and Pioneer Family Park. The land used for the park was donated to the city by Jackson County. Plans for the park include a recreation area with a playground on the west side of Bear Creek, a community center, an amphitheater and a gazebo. A natural park is planned for the east side of the creek. City officials are seeking $210,000 in grants to pay for construction costs. In other action, the city council approved spending $1,531 to purchase a new computer and computer equipment for the Phoenix Fire Department. The money is to come from the fire department's general fund budget, according to City Recorder Betty Smith.
