Find prior episodes at www.dailytidings.com. Last week I worked with Josh on a zombie puppet head. Today we were starting our political art project. After Obama’s State of the Union speech, Valentina had decided to change direction, wanting to raise awareness of the student debt crisis. We were working with student activists, alongside our recruits from the senior center. My team included Rusty, Josh and a student named Jackson. Jackson was to walk inside the giant head, while Josh, Rusty and I used rods to float it above him, accompanying Jackson throughout his school day. Other groups worked with other students. At 3 p.m. we’d all gather in the student plaza for a flash mob extravaganza. The media had been alerted. The college agreed to the protest as long as we didn’t disrupt classes. “How do I see out of this thing?” Jackson asked as we lowered the head over him. “Look through the mouth mesh,” said Josh, who along with Rusty and I, was dressed in all black, including a black scarf tied across his face. This strategy kept focus on the puppet instead of the puppeteers. The zombie’s oozing yellow eyes bulged out against its gray, pustule-coated skin. The word “Debt” was carved into its forehead in purple letters. “Are we going into classrooms?” asked Rusty, barely audible through his face scarf. “Nope. We’ll just wait outside until class is over. Here we go!” We walked up the hill together, trying to mirror Jackson’s pace. Other students stopped and gaped. We tilted the head towards them, saying hello. Some started following us. “Why do you keep sniffing that thing?” Josh asked as we stood parked outside Jackson’s computer science class. “I’m priming my nose. I need to figure out who threatened me.” “Let me see that.” Josh grabbed the torn up, stuffed dog someone had tied to my doorknob a week ago. He examined the gouged out eyes, and the ketchup-covered belly. “Why didn’t you tell me about this, Dawn? Is Babycakes OK?” “Yeah, we’re all fine. I didn’t tell you because I knew you’d try to stop me from finding out who did it.” “Did you go to the police?” Josh asked. “They’d take the evidence and I wouldn’t be able to keep my nose tuned.” Someone pulled on the intestines hanging out of its mouth. “Be gentle please,” said Josh, handing out flyers to bemused students who crowded around us. At one point we had about 10 people petting the intestines, peering into the mouth, and taking selfies with the zombie. Rusty then provided a mini-lecture on the power of Agitprop Theater as a form of protest, inviting them to the 3 p.m. flash mob. Jackson returned and we walked off campus with him to get lunch. At the coffee shop, I got a whiff of something familiar. I pulled out the stuffed dog again. “Now what?” asked Josh, finishing up a bagel. “That guy at the counter, the skinny one in the black jeans? I need to follow him. I’ll catch up with you guys later,” I said. “No way are you going anywhere without us,” Josh declared. “That’s right, we all go together,” echoed Jackson and Rusty. So when mystery man left the coffee shop, we followed him, zombie head and all. He walked down the street and sat on a bench, as if waiting for someone. “We can’t just hang out here. He’ll get suspicious,” I said. “No he won’t. Just hand out flyers to people. Act natural,” said Rusty. “So what does he smell like?” asked Josh. “Like wet garlic, hashish and patchouli. Like the bombed house, like the dog,” I said. After 10 minutes, I was shocked to see my own brother-in-law, Ray Jones, Sherry’s husband, join our mystery man on the bench. What was going on? Next week: The zombie has a little face-to-face time with black jeans man.
