Here a worker does preparatory work last week. Daily Tidings / Jamie Lusch After opening for two weeks, the Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink is closed again while a temporary cover is installed. The rink opened Nov. 18, a day later than planned due to poor ice conditions, then closed again Dec. 3 and is expected to reopen Dec. 17. The grand opening “First Frost” celebration previously planned for Nov. 22 is now set for 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. The cover, which will be installed at a cost of about $18,000 under terms of a contract approved by the City Council on Dec. 2 after the Planning Commission gave its approval on Nov. 25, helps protect the ice from the elements and reduces the number of rink closures due to poor ice conditions. The cover installation will be done by Key Manufacturing of Portland, which removed the tent cover in April. Removal is expected by the end of March. The outdoor rink is operated by Ashland Parks & Recreation at 95 Winburn Way, directly across from Lithia Park.
