Montana State quarterback Dakota Prukop told The Register-Guard he is thinking seriously about following in Vernon Adams Jr.’s footsteps and transferring to Oregon. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound dual-threat standout will graduate with a degree in economics this weekend and also plans to make a recruiting visit to Eugene. Prukop is a redshirt junior and would have only one year at Oregon or wherever he plays next season. “Definitely, it’s cool,” Prukop said of seeing Adams flourish in the Oregon offense after putting up prolific numbers at Eastern Washington for three seasons. “Vernon is a very special athlete. He did an outstanding job this year making the jump. That solidifies the whole thought process.” In 11 games this season, Prukop completed 62.8 percent of his passes for 3,025 yards with 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also was the Bobcats’ second-leading rusher with 797 net yards and 11 touchdowns. After Montana State finished 5-6, including a wild 55-50 loss at Eastern Washington, the school fired head coach Rob Ash. He has been replaced by Washington defensive line coach Jeff Choate. “Dakota has been a great Bobcat, a tremendous teammate and a leader in this program,” Choate said in a statement. “In the short time I’ve known him and his family, there is no doubt he will achieve success in whatever pursuit he chooses. I respect his desire to look at all of his options and I certainly hope he chooses to remain in our program, but we will support his decision regardless.” The coaching carousel could lead Prukop and his position coach to Oregon. According to a 247Sports report, Montana State offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey, a former Chip Kelly assistant at New Hampshire, may end up on Mark Helfrich’s staff as the quarterbacks coach. Oregon has lost offensive coordinator Scott Frost, who is now the head coach at Central Florida. Wide receivers coach Matt Lubick is the logical replacement. “I know they’re getting a new offensive coordinator. If they keep it the same, which I feel they will, that system is similar to what I’ve run at Montana State,” Prukop said of the Ducks’ offense. “I’m going to explore all options. Oregon has done a great job recruiting. You can tell they’re the best in the business at it.” Prukop said he has not spoken to Helfrich yet, but he has been impressed with Lubick during the process. “Extremely impressed,” Prukop said. “Coach Lubick is a real good guy. He knows how to recruit, he’s a professional and he’s doing a great job. I’m extremely lucky.” Prukop said if he and Cramsey both ended up at Oregon it would be “a neat deal,” but the decision will be made based on what’s best for his career and his family. “The biggest thing (Cramsey) ever gave me was his trust and the confidence to play at a high level,” Prukop said. “He believed in me, and that sparked me.” Prukop, despite missing the final two games of his sophomore season with an injury, passed for 2,559 yards and had 3,525 yards of total offense with 18 touchdown passes and 13 rushing touchdowns during his first season as the starter in 2014. Coincidentally, Prukop’s father, Tim, is a former assistant coach who worked for TCU coach Gary Patterson. The Ducks and Horned Frogs will meet in the Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2 in San Antonio. “That’s going to be a fun game to watch,” said Prukop, who considers Oregon to be his first choice but will also consider a transfer to TCU and Texas. “One of places I wanted to go growing up was TCU.” Like Adams, Prukop was not recruited by major programs coming out of high school in Austin, Texas. Playing in the Pac-12 as a senior would give him a chance to showcase his talents Adams did.
