It is don’t volunteer! By overturning the commission’s decision to select "Gather" as the Gateway Island project, they have negated more than two years of effort to select a project to enhance Ashland. Our Ashland volunteers were qualified to make this choice. They spent many hours in meetings and discussions with the public and the artists. But four council members responded to critics. What can we expect when another choice is made and a new group of critics appear? The commission members' only reward for their efforts is to retain their selected artist. How sad to see volunteerism rejected. Why would anyone else try to benevolently improve our city? The council isn’t interested. Morton Perle Ashland Pipeline makes no sense I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed LNG pipeline and terminus of the Jordon Cove project. The proposal to construct a pipeline crossing 400 rivers and streams in Jackson and Josephine counties, containing gas to be shipped as LNG to Asia makes no sense in 2016. Shell Oil’s plans for Arctic drilling have failed. The Keystone Pipeline has been stopped. The USA has just agreed in Paris to contain our carbon emissions in coordination with virtually all other nations in the world. “Keep it in the ground” is a slogan becoming much more frequent as the world responds to clear science and widespread experience of global warming. It is time to stop this huge destructive project, its catastrophic potential to destroy fish habitat, undermine our fishing and tourism industries and perpetuate further carbon emissions. Where is the benefit? Like Arctic drilling, this pipeline proposal should be rejected as unwise and untimely. Oregon should be encouraging and supporting solar and wind projects that are much better alternatives, low carbon emitters and major job creators . These renewable industries will coexist with fisheries and tourism building a much stronger, more prosperous future for Oregon and protecting our state and nation from worsening climate change. Marsha Bennett Ashland State of the city I just came home from the lively, informative, second annual State of the City gathering at the community center evening filled with gratitude and admiration for our mayor, city councilors, all the city officials, workers and volunteers for their devotion, dedication and hard work. Grateful also for the opportunity to honor Peter Buckley for his decade of service, and the Soroptimists for their vital contribution to our community. Though the crowd was spilling out the doors, I wish even more people had attended. I learned so much that I can't articulate, but my understanding, respect, awe and appreciation for what it takes to run a city has vastly expanded. I hope the mayor's comprehensive message will be on the city website so everyone can have access to the exciting proposals we heard tonight. Thank you, Pam Marsh, for initiating this gathering. I'll be encouraging everyone I know to show up next year, so maybe we should hold it at the Armory.
