GUEST OPINION Techtoberfest event was a rousing success Comment By Rosetta Shaw DailyTidings.com By Rosetta Shaw Posted Oct. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Rosetta Shaw Posted Oct. 16, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News I would like to share my appreciation of the City of Ashland for allowing Sustainable Valley Technology Group to host Techtoberfest this previous weekend at the Historic Ashland Armory and on B Street. Throughout the day, we estimate that over 1,200 community members came out to enjoy the exhibitors, booths, musical groups, pedal-powered stage, speakers, food and local craft beer. This event was designed to increase community support for local businesses and entrepreneurs and throughout our planning phase, the City of Ashland demonstrated consistent support of our mission through allowing us the use of the space we needed and working with us to get all of our requirements met so that we could bring this event to Ashland. Techtoberfest, though our second annual event, was the first of its kind. We had never before done such a large-scale celebration with so many elements to organize and we could not have done it without the help of so many people. I would like to first offer my deepest appreciation to IBM and the Bank of the Cascades for being the first companies to recognize the potential of Techtoberfest and sponsor our efforts. In the end, Techtoberfest was funded by over 20 sponsorships and we could not have done it without their support. We are extremely lucky to have received the support of Gil’s of Ashland; they kindly joined us on our quest, bringing both the local craft beer and the knowledge that was critical to the success of our beer tent. Finally, our Technology in Action exhibits would not have been complete without ScienceWorks. The three exhibits they brought, and the others they assisted in finding, helped us to engage our younger innovators and inspire a whole new generation of entrepreneurs. I also would like to thank all the people whose time and energy went into creating Techtoberfest. Cassandra Davis, our project manager, worked harder on this event than anyone and we owe the success of Techtoberfest to her skill, dedication, and experience. I would also like to appreciate our intern from SOU, Chandler Criswell, who stepped up to offer Cassandra the support she needed. Thanks also go to Laurel Briggs and Justin Dye for offering us their expertise in graphic design and videography, which lent a visual professionalism to all our promotional material. I also owe a debt of gratitude to Rogue Valley Micro Devices and their unwavering commitment to support this event in whatever way we needed. Finally, we could not have pulled this off without the participation of the Historic Ashland Armory and its crew, all our exhibitors, speakers, musicians, performers, and the wonderful people who came out to volunteer at the event. As you can see from the number of people who were integral to this project, Techtoberfest’s success was a group effort by and for the community.
