Southern Oregon University Southern Oregon University (SOU) has used its position as one of Ashland’s leading institutions to advance sustainability programs, both on campus and by serving as a hub to connect with and support the community. SOU’s ongoing sustainability efforts include implementing energy efficiency and solar power projects, reducing waste, and conducting greenhouse gas inventories to assess its progress in reducing emissions. SOU was one of the first universities in the country to offset 100% of its energy and water use, with on-site renewable energy generation, carbon offset credits, and Water Restoration Certificates. The university also worked closely with Bee City USA—an organization that honors cities for their commitment to supporting pollinators —to create Bee Campus USA, an offshoot designation that recognizes pollinator-friendly campuses. 58 ASHLAND CLIMATE & ENERGY ACTION PLANBUILDINGS & ENERGY
