Judging by the report of last week's School Board meeting, the district's five elementary school principals are taking the right approach by involving parents in the process from the beginning. At a parents' meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, the principals will present data on where students live, what schools they attend and how best to achieve the goals of using district resources efficiently and keeping class sizes as small — and balanced — as possible. District staff will explain the data for parents, but most important, they will listen to parents' concerns before making recommendations to the School Board.. Boundary changes can generate hard feelings when students are shifted from a school they know to one they don't. Parents who take an intense interest in their children's education may have chosen to buy or rent a home because it was in the attendance area of a school they particularly wanted their children to attend. At the same time, class size is an important issue to many parents, and a school that is more crowded than another might need to have its boundary adjusted to even out class sizes. Walker Principal Patty Michiels said "accordion" borders that can shift to adjust class sizes are one possibility, but stressed nothing has been decided yet.
