Not only read their letter, but make the effort to attend the City Council meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 1, 7 p.m., at the council chambers at 1155 E. Main St. I have lived in the valley since 1966, almost 50 years, and have seen vast changes. Ashland was a charming, small town in the 1960s. Then, I think, in 1973, an article in Sunset magazine, extolling our virtues, began our demise as a small, country town. "Everyone" wanted to move to Ashland, and now it is a "big-time," thriving city. All over the world, towns that were once happy in their smallness, have lost that. I feel that Ashland is already plenty big; we do not need to grow any more. People who want larger cities, continued growth, have the opportunity to live in Portland, San Francisco, etc. Let us not spoil our precious town with ever-increasing growth — it will lead to more big city problems. See you at Civic Center Tuesday, Sept. 1, 7 pm. Come early for a good seat. Carola Lacy Ashland Why ticket Aaron? We are a community; many are trying hard to be an inclusive community. I'd like to know, what is the intention in giving Aaron tickets? It's pretty clear that he doesn't have money enough to pay the fines. Do we want him in jail? Do we want him in another town? Do we really want to make his life more difficult? There are plenty of dispensers of "poop bags" where Aaron walks. Why not figure out a way to dispose of the sheep feces so that he doesn't get into trouble about it? Chief O'Meara invited us all to meet with him a couple months ago. He talked about people carrying their wine glasses around and said that the open alcoholic beverage regulations are not enforced for those of us who enjoy First Fridays carrying our wine between venues. In the spirit of an inclusive community, can't we allow Aaron to walk his sheep, and sit sometimes? I, for one, would miss him if he had to leave town. He and I have had some amazing conversations over the years. Joanna Niemann Ashland Don't Roundup our bees Yet another study has been published about the ill effects from glyphosate (primary ingredient in Roundup). This study is not about the effects of glyphosate on people, however. The report, published July 2 in The Journal of Experimental Biology, documents the impact of very low doses of glyphosate on bees.  http://bit.ly/1IDZQUQ According to the study's results, "in honeybees, exposure to GLY [glyphosate] doses commonly found in agricultural settings impairs the cognitive capacities needed to retrieve and integrate spatial information for a successful return to the hive. Therefore, honeybee navigation is affected by ingesting traces of the most widely used herbicide worldwide, with potential long-term negative consequences for colony foraging success." So, if honeybees are affected, wouldn't our native bees and bumble bees also have impaired navigational skills? We already suspect Southern Oregon’s Franklin’s bumblebee is extinct. Let's not add more to this list. Ashland, Talent and Phoenix recently voted to bee-come a Bee City USA, and SOU is the nation's first Bee Campus USA. With these titles comes the honor and the responsibility to support all our pollinators with forage, habitat, and water. And no glyphosate.
