Her claim that the press is not free is false. The government doesn't run the Ashland Daily Tidings. The Ashland paper extended the freedom of the press to Leah Ireland. The ADT made the Guest Forum section available to her. The Ashland Daily Tidings did not censor her opinion. The ADT is a worthy paper. The Ashland Daily Tidings allowed Leah Ireland to make the following statement: "A free press is what all wars have been fought for." I know of no war in which the battle cry was "Free the Press." Most wars are driven by economics, state security, religion or a combination of the preceding three reasons. Perhaps in the future, Leah Ireland will evaluate the validity of her sentences because the Ashland Daily Tidings, being a fine example of a free press, will print her invalid sentences. In the spirit of the free press, the ADT printed sentences written by Noreen Hulteen. With the same spirit, the ADT printed David Churchman's valid sentences which proved several of Noreen Hulteen's sentences to be invalid. I hope David Churchman will write letters to the Medford Mail Tribune, because most letters from Ashland and Talent are similar to those written by Leah Ireland and Noreen Hulteen. Another topic: How about a state sales tax on the non-essential items? A higher rate on the luxury items? Thanks for reading. Bill Hartley Medford 'Jake-brake' wake-up parade is dangerous This morning (Jan. 7), a neighbor came within a breath of loosing his life. He had backed down his driveway onto Highway 66 in the Greensprings just as a speeding log truck rounded a corner hundreds of feet away. The truck driver locked his brakes and lost control. With the truck still some distance away, my neighbor was able to get out of his vehicle and jump over an embankment to safety. The log truck demolished his vehicle. About the same time, another log truck lost control, jack-knifed and crashed in a "solo-spinout." We are all quite tolerant of these "visitors" to our mountain community. There is the 4 a.m. "jake-brake" wake-up parade. The near total disregard of posted speed limits in the Lincoln/Pinehurst School area. An apparent unwillingness to chain up in icy or snow conditions. And an obvious inability to self-regulate and cease operations when conditions are unsafe. I am certain that we will also have to tolerate the eventual loss of a life or lives. Gene Davies Ashland A 'cornucopia' of disent It's comforting to know that whenever I have a craving to read the prose of some disgruntled citizen criticize this country, I need look no further than the pages of my local newspaper. While most of the letters offer little more than the occasional snack of anti-capitalism, the Saturday (Jan. 3) Tidings afforded me a virtual cornucopia of dissent. How ironic that someone out there would be facing such a dilemma as Hollywood, Bush-bashing capital of the world, creating a film that has an unambiguous moral message. That's unacceptable! Reality is too complex, with too many gray areas! Allow me to clear up the confusion regarding the concept of "gray areas." This is just another name for Moral Relativism, that neo-Marxist panacea where truth is relative and sympathy is reserved for the enemy while our nation's self-defense and sovereignty are delegated to the U.N. Moral Relativism is a wonderland of skewed priorities where people are more frightened of the theoretical hazard of global warming than the true danger of death by terrorism. Ask the victims of 9/11 and their grieving families if they see any "gray areas" about who the enemy is. And the message of the "Lord of the Rings" that is so confounding? Evil does exist in the world, and you cannot appease it, you cannot co-exist with it, and you cannot wish it away. You must go to where evil exists and utterly destroy it before it destroys you. And you read it here in black and white. Steve Wyant Ruch Vote yes on 30 It has been suggested that we citizens do our part to help the economy by making lots of purchases. However, for most of us, our largest financial asset is our home, and realtors tell us that its value is based on "location, location, location." So, rather than buying lots of "stuff," vote Yes on Measure 30, thereby ensuring that our local schools, one of the biggest factors in that "location," remain strong.
