DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 4, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Sep. 4, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News It may not seem like much, but Southern Oregon University's sale of carbon credits to Chevrolet is a glimpse of things to come as SOU — and, perhaps, other public and private institutions — tries to become as energy-efficient as possible. The ultimate goal, known as "net zero," would mean nearly zero carbon emissions, and any above zero would be offset in other ways. That may be a long shot for the university, because everything is factored in, including local students commuting by car and others visiting the campus by taking airline flights to and from their homes elsewhere in the country. But the sale to Chevrolet of carbon credits is a major step toward that goal, however elusive it might turn out to be. The credits were amassed by the university's new energy-efficient dormitories, which sport a large solar array in addition to energy-saving design. The best part of the deal, which is part of Chevy's corporate commitment to invest in renewable energy and efficiency, is that the company will retire the credits, not use them to emit more carbon itself. That means Chevy won't cancel out SOU's reduction. When thinking about taking action to counteract global climate change, it's easy to throw up one's hands in surrender because the actions of a single individual are minuscule compared with the enormity of the problem. But a university is far larger than an individual. A statewide university system is larger still. Imagine every university in the country participating, and the problem begins to seem just a little less insurmountable.  DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Sep. 4, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. calendar Connect with DailyTidings.com Facebook Twitter RSS Back to top Reader Services Reader Services home Subscriptions Subscriber controls Contact us Submissions Photos Events Letters to the editor Corrections Alerts Email alerts RSS feeds Text Alerts Advertise Media Kit Home Products and services Ad rates Advertising contacts Mail Tribune Daily Tidings The Nickel Shop Our Valley Blogs Stay Informed Email newsletter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
