Ashland police Deputy Chief Warren Hensman reported 34-year-old Michael Walter Cohen was arrested Monday on first-, second- and third-degree theft charges. The investigation started last Wednesday. On that date, police received a call just before midnight about suspicious activity near the intersection of Siskiyou Boulevard and Park Street. Officers arrived to see Cohen there. He was arrested on charges of second-degree theft and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle. Court records show he pleaded guilty to both charges Nov. 19 and was sentenced to probation. Police served a search warrant on Cohen's home, in the 2000 block of Siskiyou Boulevard, because of the number of open theft and burglary cases in the immediate area where Cohen was initially arrested. Hensman said police found property reported stolen from five recent cases, including tools, jewelry, and electronics. "A lot of the property was certainly identified as other people's property," Hensman said. Cohen is no longer listed in the Jackson County Jail, and there were no additional court records for him Tuesday afternoon. Hensman said the case is still under investigation, and is asking residents in the area around Siskiyou Boulevard and Park Street who also believe they are victims of theft to contact the department at 541-482-5211, on its anonymous tip line at 541-552-2333, or by email at [email protected].
