LOCAL ROUNDUP Owls stun No. 8 Raiders OIT overcomes 12-point second-half deficit; Ashland wrestler Norvell advances to final By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Feb. 28, 2015 @ 12:01 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Feb. 28, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> The Oregon Tech women's basketball team clawed back from a 12-point deficit in the final eight minutes to stun eighth-ranked Southern Oregon in the Cascade Conference semifinals, 77-74, Friday at Bob Riehm Arena.  The improbable victory advances the Owls to the CCC championship game Monday against conference regular-season champion and 17th-ranked Eastern Oregon. The Raiders, who saw their 17-game home win streak come to an end, must now wait to find out whether they are awarded an at-large bid to the NAIA Division II national tournament. Southern Oregon (26-4) appeared well on its way to what would have been its 10th straight victory when Demi Sahlinger hit a jumper to give the Raiders a 62-50 lead with 8:09 to go, but Karly LeVeque's 3-pointer at the other end sparked a 10-2 Owls run capped by Megan Whetstone's 3 with still 6:23 to go.  The Owls (22-10) overtook the Raiders for the first time, 67-66, on another Whetstone jumper with 4:30 left. After five more lead changes the Owls reclaimed the lead for good on a short jumper by Tess Armstrong with 1:06 to go.  The Raiders had several opportunities to answer but never did. Ashley Claussen missed a 3-point attempt with 45 seconds left and, following a missed layup by Armstrong, was stripped by LeVeque while looking for an opportunity to drive.  LeVeque drained two free throws with two seconds left but SOU called time out and executed a perfect inbounds play that, following another quick time out, gave the home team one final chance to set something up near midcourt. The Owls' defense covered it well, however, as SOU center Alexi Smith was the only Raider left open. Standing all alone in front of the Raider bench, Smith's second-3-point attempt of the season was well off and the Owls celebrated their second straight trip to the CCC championship round. Whetstone led everyone in both points (26) and rebounds (14), LeVeque added 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including 3 of 6 from long range.  For the Raiders, Courtney West had 16 points and nine rebounds and Carly Meister 16 points and five boards. Smith added 15 points and six rebounds for the Raiders, who outrebounded the Owls 46-29 but turned the ball over 21 times.  Prep Wrestling At Portland, Ashland High senior Sydney Norvell will wrestle for the 138-pound girls state championship after pinning Elmira senior Danielle McClennen on Friday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.  Norvell, who has yet to lose to a girl this season, pinned McClennen in 2 minutes, 24 seconds. Norvell will face Glide freshman Kyla Keen in today's championship match. For the Ashland boys, senior Christopher Bowland (160) and junior Liam Weston (220) both went 0-2 and were eliminated from the 5A boys tournament. College Softball At Redding, Southern Oregon lost to Simpson 7-0 and William Jessup 5-4 on Friday. The Raiders fell to 16-6 on the season.
