ASHLAND CRIME AHS athletes accused of robbing pizza delivery person Comment By Ryan Pfeil For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By Ryan Pfeil For the Tidings Posted Feb. 17, 2016 at 12:06 PM Updated at 7:18 PM By Ryan Pfeil For the Tidings Posted Feb. 17, 2016 at 12:06 PM Updated at 7:18 PM » Social News Three Ashland High School student athletes were arrested Tuesday in connection with the robbery Monday night of a pizza delivery driver. Ashland police arrested Michael James Zawadi Pruitt, 18, and two 17-year-old male minors on robbery and conspiracy charges after the three turned themselves in. Police said in a release the arrests were made at about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday. Pruitt was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court Wednesday on two counts of second-degree robbery, court records show. His bail was listed at $50,000 Wednesday afternoon. The two minors were lodged at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center, according to facility officials. One of the two — officials did not say who — also faces charges of unlawful use of a stun gun and fourth-degree assault. Ashland police said the suspects turned themselves in after police got in touch with family members. "They all came to the police station willingly for interviews," said Ashland police Deputy Chief Warren Hensman. The robbery occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Monday near the corner of Terra Avenue and Mohawk Street. A female driver for the Great American Pizza Co. had tried to deliver a pizza at an address on Mohawk Street, but a resident there denied ordering one. When the delivery person walked back to her car, a man approached her and said he had placed the order, police said. As the delivery driver reached back into the car to get the pizza, she felt something pressed into her back. She turned and saw the man holding a device that looked like a stun gun. She also spotted two other men walking to her vehicle. The group demanded the pizza and the money the driver carried, police said. She surrendered the food and drove away. The suspect who brandished the stun gun did not shock the driver, police said. Police declined to say whether the robbers also got cash. Investigators said they identified the suspects after retrieving images of them walking into a 7-Eleven store at 1281 Siskiyou Blvd. All three played varsity football for Ashland High School, according to www.ashlandfootballclub.com . Pruitt, who had committed to playing football for Western Oregon University, was the focus of a Daily Tidings feature story that detailed parts of his life, including his adoption in Kenya. Pruitt was recognized with all-league honors following the football season. This story has been updated to remove the names of the two minors.
