The 16th-ranked NAIA Raiders (1-1) suffered their worst loss and first shutout in 33 games dating back to Nov. 4, 2000. The NCAA Div. II Lumberjacks (2-1) gained only 346 yards, but staked a 10-0 at halftime edge and added three touchdowns after forcing two SOU fumbles and returning an interception 61 yards in the second stanza. SOU had only one drive with multiple first downs in each half and their deepest penetration into Humboldt territory stalled at the 35 early in the fourth period. Senior running back Antar Mahasin, who gained 53 yards on 11 carries, accounted for Southern's biggest play: a 24-yard fourth-quarter scurry. The Lumberjacks were led by running back Lionel Arnold (21 carries, 86 yards, 1 touchdown), quarterback Jason Baughman (15-for-22, 148 yards) and receiver Dustin Creager (7 catches, 94 yards, 1 touchdown). Senior quarterback Brandon Griffith went 11-for-19 for 86 yards fro SOU. Sophomores Willis Cooley (13 tackles) and Kellan Quick (10) led the Raider defense, which was compromised by short-field situations all night as a result of four lost fumbles. SOU stymied a Lumberjack 4th-and-goal from the 1 in the fourth quarter. Streak snapped The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 1-1 tie at Dominican University in San Rafael, Calif., Sunday afternoon. The Raiders (0-3-1) out-shot the Penguins (1-2-1) 22-16 but freshman midfielder Mara Rappleyea's 10-yard goal in the 70th minute was equalized by a successful DU penalty kick 10 minutes later. The squads played two scoreless 10-minute overtime sessions before settling for the draw. Junior midfielder Julia Reed led SOU with six shots, and junior all-star Stacy Ermini assisted Rappleyea's goal. Southern faces fourth-ranked Notre Dame de Namur Tuesday afternoon in Belmont, Calif. Volleyball reels in win The 10th-ranked Southern Oregon University volleyball team week-long offensive binge continued in a 30-12, 30-20, 30-14 victory at Cascade College in Portland on Saturday night. SOU (8-3, 3-0) won its 15th consecutive match over an NAIA Region I opponent by hitting an astronomical .394 (51 kills in 104 attempts with only 10 errors). Meanwhile, Cascade (0-4, 0-3) had 23 kills and 19 errors for a .043 clip. Sophomore hitter Jess Childress led the Raiders with 12 kills; junior middle Nicholette Le Bel added nine.
