Watershed symposium set at SOU By Vickie Aldous Ashland Daily Tidings Students from throughout the Bear Creek valley will give presentations on their outdoor education projects during the Eighth Annual Bear Creek Watershed Education Symposium. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Southern Oregon University Stevenson Student Union. "It's like an end-of-year show and tell," said David Jacob, Bear Creek Watershed Education Partners administrator. "Students get to show what they've done and learn from other students. It's exciting to see it come together at the end of the year. The (natural resource) agencies will be there as well. It's a nice learning opportunity." Symposium organizers estimate about 220 students from Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Medford, Central Point and Eagle Point representing all grade levels will attend. Students from the Willow Wind Community Learning Center in Ashland will give a presentation on birds and display their naturalist journals, complete with drawings, during the first student presentation session from 10 to 10:40 a.m. In addition to student presentations, the event features table displays set up by representatives of more than 15 natural resource agencies and community organizations. The groups will provide information to students, teachers and other community members on the work they do concerning natural resources. Participating organizations include SOU's Environmental Education Program, SOU's Regional Ecosystem Applied Learning (REAL) Corps, Wildlife Images, Oregon Trout Salmon Watch, U.S. Forest Service, Rogue Flyfishers, Siskiyou Field Institute, Southwest Oregon Resource Conservation and Development Council, WaterWatch and the Mt. Ashland Ski Area. The symposium offers a forum for discussion and a means to explore new ways of studying the watershed, while reinforcing the idea that we all live in a watershed and efforts to understand and improve its condition are interconnected, according to organizers. The event is sponsored by the Bear Creek Watershed Education Partners, the Rogue Valley Council of Governments, REAL Corps and the Environmental Education Program. Funds for the symposium are provided through a grant from the Carpenter Foundation.
