--> --> Proud to be from Midland I recently donated the documentary booklet, "History of Early Midland," by longtime Klamath Basin and Midland area resident Verland L. Huff to the Southern Oregon Historical Society's research library at 106 N. Central Ave. in Medford. Call (541) 773-6536 ,or www.sohs, respectively. Midland is my hometown and is located eight miles south of Klamath Falls, Ore., and is situated along Highway 97 north of Lower Klamath Lake. Established in 1908 with the coming of the Southern Pacific Railroad (now Union Pacific), Midland became a major shipping point in our region for livestock, grain, hay, potatoes, oats, and farm products. In fact, the ZX Ranch at Paisley, Ore., in Lake County, at one time had 3000 head of cattle awaiting shipping via railroad at Midland's stock corrals. The Grange played a prominent role in the Midland area as the social center of the community and hosted many dances, box socials, and civic meetings. In fact, it was at Midland Grange Hall (Precinct #70) where I first voted during both the May primary and November general elections. Thus, I credit the Grange for inspiring me to become the active voter, letter writer, and civic/political minded individual I am today. The adjacent swamp land and water surrounding Midland once supported a huge waterfowl population of ducks, geese, cormorants, egrets, herons and other bird life. Bald eagles and deer still inhabit this sagebrush area located 65 miles east of Ashland in Klamath Count. I'm pleased to say, "I grew up at Midland." James A. Farmer Ashland Email your...
