This one would add bike lanes where there are none, move delivery trucks out of travel lanes and narrow East Main Street from three lanes to two. The idea is not completely far-fetched, and has some advantages. Still, there are concerns the city should address during the review process. The primary objection to the North Main changes involved difficult turns onto North Main from residential streets. That's not an issue here, because the intersections have signals. Bike lanes, especially where they don't now exist, are generally a good thing. So is providing a place for delivery trucks to park out of the flow of traffic. Those spaces would be available for public parking after 4 p.m., another good thing. The concerns: Safety is the primary consideration. Cars will be parked along the curb and pulling across bike lanes to enter traffic, as will trucks moving in and out of the loading zones. That's a potential hazard for cyclists. Reducing travel lanes to two will also mean a steadier stream of traffic through downtown, especially during tourist season. That could have air-quality consequences if it takes longer to get through town. These aren't necessarily deal-breakers, just items for discussion. The Downtown Parking Management and Circulation Ad Hoc Advisory Committee — there's a mouthful — meets Wednesday; if the plan moves forward, public hearings will follow.
