LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 5 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted May. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Walden serves well I see Congressman Walden, his bipartisan, problem-solving efforts and visits to Southern Oregon on the news often, so I was surprised by the misinformed accusations in Doyle Hirsch’s April 29 letter. Walden has worked closely with Democratic Congressman DeFazio to reform forest management to fund counties and create jobs. He has worked alongside our Democratic senators to bolster the Ashland Forest Resiliency Project and is working closely with Sen. Jeff Merkley to find a viable solution for the Klamath Basin water issue. Not to mention Walden’s regular presence across his vast district to hear from us. In fact, he’s already held at least one town hall in each of the 20 counties including the one in Medford I attended, where I saw him answer questions from all sides. Rather than assume an answer, I decided to call Walden’s office and ask about the Oregon Caves event Mr. Hirsch referenced. Turns out, Walden wasn’t even invited. Instead, that day he attended the opening for a facility bringing tech jobs to The Dalles and helped support a group serving developmental disabilities in the Columbia Gorge. Does this sound like someone campaigning for himself? Hardly. Someone working hard for everyone across his district? Absolutely. Sue Kupillas Medford It's bad enough It's likely fossil fuel companies have accelerated global climate change, but now, they — the fossil fuel corporations — are creating earthquakes. And what is unbelievable is that no political person or group is putting a halt to this. In fact, from what I have been reading in the newspaper, fossil fuel wants to develop several cross-country fuel pipelines, as well as more Gulf of Mexico oil platform rigs. In case you may have wondered, more platforms indicate many more leaks, likely. Continued fracking, or injecting wastewater, is a direct link to the creation of earthquake. People: you realize, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out! Jeff Kassman Ashland Defend the GMO vote Measure 15-119, which protects Jackson Country from genetically engineered crops, passed in last year’s election by an overwhelming 66 percent. This month it is being challenged in federal court. On May 20, 2015, in Medford, the U.S. District Court will hear arguments to decide whether the new ordinance complies with Oregon’s Right to Farm Law. Two Jackson County farmers who grow GE alfalfa filed a lawsuit in November claiming the ordinance violates Oregon’s Right to Farm Act and would cause loss of personal property without just compensation. When the lawsuit was filed, Our Family Farms Coalition and supporters involved in the May 2014 victory leapt into action, hiring their own team of lawyers from Center for Food Safety and Earthrise Law Center. In February, Judge Clarke allowed Our Family Farms Coaliltion, Oshala Farms, and Chris Hardy, who first discovered GMO growth in our county, to join the case as interveners. On one day, if the defense doesn’t prevail, Jackson County will be back to square one: GMO crops will grow in our county and will affect the livelihood of many organic and traditional farmers. It will also affect the availability of healthy food for all of us. Defend the Vote We citizens don’t need to feel helpless. Although we cannot vote in this lawsuit and rallies won’t help, there are ways to help Defend the Vote. The crucial need is money to help pay the awesome legal defense team. You can: Conveniently donate at Ashland Food Co-op cash registers or online. Join the online Kickstarter campaign. Attend the big concert on May 17 at the Historic Ashland Armory. Show support by joining friends and neighbors at the federal courthouse at 2 p.m. May 20.
