The NAIA Raiders (6-5) hung with the Lumberjacks (3-3) for much of the North Coast Inn Classic contest and trailed just 46-44 with 10:47 remaining before the NCAA Div. II squad assembled the game-sealing run. Senior forward Jenna Washington — the twin sister of SOU men’s basketball All-American Shea Washington — led all players with 23 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in HSU’s second straight victory over the Ashland school. Southern Oregon received 15 points and five steals from sophomore point guard Chelsey Zimmerman, and juniors Andi Peterson and Jenna Ayers each scored nine. The Raiders never led, but Southern recovered from a 17-9 deficit to pull even with an 8-0 spurt, and it trailed 30-29 at halftime. Humboldt overcame 24 turnovers by shooting a sizzling 57-percent in the second stanza (16 of 28), while SOU missed 13 of its final 21 shots and was 17-for-46 overall (37 percent). A Zimmerman 3-pointer capped a 12-2 Raider run and pulled them within 46-44, but SOU was unable to get any closer than six the rest of the contest. Southern Oregon wraps the two-day tournament tomorrow against NAIA Div.
