Guanajuato Mayor Eduardo Romero Hicks is in Ashland this week to kick-start planning for the 40th anniversary celebration of the two cities' relationship, set for 2009. He will meet with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival later this week to plan events in conjunction with Guanajuato's Cervantes Festival. Since his arrival Sunday, Hicks has met with Mayor John Morrison and Southern Oregon University President Mary Cullinan. He plans to also meet with the Amigo Club and the Chamber of Commerce to establish more business connections. "With the celebration of the 40th anniversary, we need to get all the organizations together," Hicks said, including the media. He visited the Daily Tidings on Tuesday with ideas to enhance the flow of news between the two cities. "The thing that will keep the program growing is the new generation knowing about the relationship," he said. For example, there have been 78 marriages between residents of the two cities, and one of his city staff members was born in Ashland, he said. "This is the example of a sister city relationship," Hicks said about Ashland. "We have over 20 sister cities, and some of them we don't even e-mail." The celebrations will take place in the spring of 2009 in Ashland and in August of that year in Guanajuato. A secondary mission of Hicks' trip was to escort 14-year-old Anel Abundes to Canyonville Christian Academy, 70 miles from Ashland, where she received a four-year scholarship. Her parents' visas didn't come through in time, and they were ambivalent about sending Anel to the United States. To reassure them, Hicks said, "You know what?
